Drainage Projects

KTA Tenaga in the capacity both as lead and supporting consultant has undertaken a number of Drainage projects which include:

Besut Flood Mitigation Feasibility Study Project

The Besut River and its major tributaries, the Pelagat River and the Angga River, drain a basin area of about 857 sq. km. in northern Trengganu.

The project study is to develop a feasible flood mitigation plan for the Besut River Basin, primarily for the benefits of agricultural developments and Besut Irrigation Scheme.  Various flood mitigation measures, both structural or non structural, such as channel improvements, variations in barrage operation, bund protection and dam construction were examined and included in the flood mitigation plan.

Samarahan River Basin Development - Sarawak

The Samarahan River Basin covers an area of about 900 sq km (352 sq miles) and lies on the western part of Sarawak.   Topographically the river basin is divided into three zones namely the Kuala Samarahan area which is low lying and is constantly subjected to 1m to 1.5m of tidal flooding, the Mid-Samarahan area which consists of flood plan of two main distributions of Sg. Tuang and Sg. Serin and the upper Samarahan which is hilly and mainly utilised for crop development.

The Company was commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Malaysia to study and formulate a master development plan to accelerate development and exploitation of the potential area in order to boost up agricultural production and subsequently raise the income level of the people living in the area and also to increase employment opportunities in the rural sector. The study comprised of data collection, water resource planning, engineering, agricultural and social aspects, management and organisation and economic analysis.   It also included identifying agricultural crops for local, regional and possible world market potential.

Masterplan Drainage System, Bandar Marang, Terengganu

The drainage system in Bandar Marang in the District of Marang, Terengganu is inadequate and not well planned, the system was not systematically integrated and some of the drains have no proper outlets, thus causing flooding in certain places of the district.

In view of the increasing urbanization of Bandar Marang, the company was engaged in February 1991 to design an integrated Masterplan Drainage System covering an area of about 1,660 hectares (4,100 acres) to improve the existing drainage system.  The drainage development is also aimed to restore the growth of the township

The Company's role in this Study was:

  • To prepare an overall Masterplan Drainage System to facilitate the development of future drainage works to meet the needs of the town growth.

  • Hydrological modelling of upper catchment to determine inflow to Bandar Marang and hydraulic modelling of urban catchment to identify the deficiencies of existing drainage system.

  • To design a detailed layout of trunk and infrastructural drainage system for the purpose of discharging effluent and overcome flooding.

  • To carry out ultimate land use investigation and highlight priority areas needed for system upgrading and development.

  • To determine the filling levels required for all low laying areas for future development so as to ensure that the whole area is well drained.

  • To determine the financial and economic viability of the proposed drainage system through assessment of financial and economic internal rate of return, cost benefit ratio and sensitivity studies.

  • To formulate a phased programme for detailed designs, and subsequent construction tasks according to priorities.
